Chapter XXXI

All believers in the time of this life, are in a continual1 warfare and combat against sin, self, the world, and the devil; and are liable to all manner of afflictions,2 tribulations and persecutions, being3 predestined and appointed thereunto, and whatsoever the saints possess or enjoy of God spiritually, is by faith; and outward and temporal things are lawfully enjoyed by a civil right by them who have4 no faith.

  1. Romans 7:23–24 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Ephesians 6:10–13 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  ↩︎
  2. 2 Timothy 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, Hebrews 2:9–10 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. ↩︎
  3. Romans 8:29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 2 Corinthians 5:7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. Galatians 2:19–20 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 1 Thessalonians 3:3 that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. ↩︎
  4. Deuteronomy 2:5 Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.  ↩︎
