Chapter IV

In the beginning1 God made all things very good; created man after His own2 image, filled with all meet perfection of nature, and free from all sin; but3 long he abode not in this honor; Satan using the subtlety of the serpent4 to seduce first Eve, then by her seducing Adam; who without any compulsion, in eating the forbidden fruit, transgressed5 the command of God, and fell, whereby death6 came upon all his posterity; who now are conceived in sin, and by nature the children of wrath, the servants of sin, the subject of7 death, and other miseries in this world, and for ever, unless the Lord Jesus Christ set them free.

  1. Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Isaiah 45:12 I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host. Colossians 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.  ↩︎
  2. 1 Corinthians 15:45–46 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.  ↩︎
  3. Ecclesiastes 7:29 See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.  ↩︎
  4. Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” Genesis 3:4–5 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.  ↩︎
  5. 1 Timothy 2:14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.  ↩︎
  6. Galatians 3:22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.  ↩︎
  7. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— Romans 5:18–19 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 6:22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. Ephesians 2:3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.  ↩︎
