That the way and manner of dispensing this ordinance,¹ is dipping or plunging the body under water; it being a sign, must answer the things signified,² which is, that interest the saints have in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ:³ And that as certainly as the body is buried under water, and risen again, so certainly shall the bodies of the saints be raised by the power of Christ, in the day of the resurrection, to reign with Christ.

1. Matthew 3:6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins^. Matthew 3:16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; Mark 15:9 And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” reads (into Jordan) in Greek;John 3:23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized Acts 8:38And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.  ↩︎

Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Revelation 1:5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood Revelation 7:14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  ↩︎
3. Romans 6:3–6 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 1 Corinthians 15:28–29 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all. Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?
