The Baptist Standards: Our Catechisms, Confessions, and Creeds is a compilation of the foundational, historic documents from the development of Particular Baptist doctrine. The bulk of this work includes the First London Baptist Confession of Faith (1646), Second London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689), The Baptist Catechism (1695), and An Orthodox Catechism (1680). These documents include their Scripture proofs for easier reference and study. Additionally, we have included the four main historic creeds (The Apostles’ Creed, The Nicene Creed, The Athanasian Creed, and The Symbol of Chalcedon). The remaining section is a series of eight appendices that are designed to provide greater context to the confessions and catechisms and to show the continuity of Particular Baptist doctrine within the Protestant tradition. Each item is preceded by a historical introduction written by Dr. Tom Nettles.
The Second London Baptist Confession of Faith includes both the original and our modernized version The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith in Modern English edited by Stan Reeves. An Orthodox Catechism has also been more significantly modernized for better understanding and recitation by Dustin Battles and Alex Lancaster. All other documents have been minimally modernized—specifically in spelling, capitalization, and updated Scripture formatting—for easier understanding and readability.
It is our hope that The Baptist Standards will serve the church today and for years to come and provide a better understanding of these timeless, foundational truths that our Baptist forefathers believed.
