Faith is the1 gift of God, wrought in the hearts of the elect by the Spirit of God; by which faith they come to know and believe the truth of the2 Scriptures, and the excellency of them above all other writings, and all things in the world, as they hold forth the glory of God in His attributes, the excellency of Christ in His nature and offices, and of the power and fullness of the Spirit in its workings and operations; and so are enabled to cast their souls upon His truth thus believed.
- John 4:10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” John 6:29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, Philippians 1:29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, ↩︎
- John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. Hebrews 4:11–12 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ↩︎
