Chapter XXXV

And all His servants of all estates (are to acknowledge Him to be their prophet, priest and king;) and called thither to be enrolled among His household servants,1 to present their bodies and souls, and to bring their gifts God has given them, to be under His heavenly conduct and government, to lead their lives in this walled sheepfold, and watered2 garden, to have communion here with His saints, that they may be assured that they are made meet to be partakers of their3 inheritance in the kingdom of God; and to supply each other’s wants, inward and outward; (and although each person has a4 propriety in his own estate, yet they are to supply each other’s wants, according as their5 necessities shall require, that the name of Jesus6 Christ may not be blasphemed through the necessity of any in the church) and also being come, they are here by Himself to be bestowed in their several order, due place, peculiar use, being fitly compact and knit together7 according to the effectual working of every part, to the edifying of itself in love.

  1. Isaiah 4:3 And he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem, Ezekiel 20:37 I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant. Ezekiel 20:40 “For on my holy mountain, the mountain height of Israel, declares the Lord God, there all the house of Israel, all of them, shall serve me in the land. There I will accept them, and there I will require your contributions and the choicest of your gifts, with all your sacred offerings. Acts 2:41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. 1 Corinthians 12:6–7 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.  ↩︎
  2. Song of Solomon 4:12 A garden locked is my sister, my bride, a spring locked, a fountain sealed. Romans 12:4–6 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; Ephesians 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, Colossians 1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. Colossians 2:5–6 For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, Colossians 2:19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.  ↩︎
  3. Acts 20:32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.  ↩︎
  4. Acts 5:4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”  ↩︎
  5. Acts 2:44–45 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. Acts 4:34–35 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.  ↩︎
  6. Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 1 Timothy 6:1 Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled.  ↩︎
  7. Ephesians 4:16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.  ↩︎
